PCT Trail Journal: Day 35 Vasquez Rocks to Mile 440.2
Day 35 on the PCT from Vasquez Rocks to Mile 440.2 was good and bad. That’s the thing about the PCT. It’s everything.
It started with bad sleep because the 49ers Saloon was right by train tracks. IT was so loud but it made it easy to get up. I packed up and was ready by 7. Then it was coffee time! I had a delicious latte and a blueberry bagel with cream cheese. It felt like pure luxury.
A trail angel picked us up at the 49ers and took us to Vasquez Rocks. The ranger was opening up shop and we got to see the tortoise get served breakfast. She had salad and loved it. She was shoving huge pieces into her mouth.
We checked out the visitor center and looked at snakes. The mean rattlesnake was named Sarah and the nice rattlesnake was called Fluffy. Lol. The ranger was super nice. He loved that I had chips strapped onto my pack.
Vasquez Rocks were cool and included a nice stream to hike by. There was also a really cool tunnel. Then we climbed and entered a dry grass area. After a while, Majka started to feel nauseated. She sat down and then projectile vomited 3x. Her skin was feeling clammy weird. Totally heat exhaustion! We worked on cooling her down. She was struggling.
We decided to hike to the next stream about 4 miles away. We took a lot of breaks. At the stream Majka and I took a nap while Dan walked to the KOA. He came back with Gatorade and ice cream. Pure heaven!
After a long break, we started the final 4 miles to Mattox Canyon. There was trail magic from honeybun 23 at the Indian Flat Day area. I took a(nother) beer for camp.
Animal sightings:
– 6 ft gopher snake
– A roadrunner
– Horny toad eating a big black bug
I arrived at the canyon around 5:20 and set up camp. It was beautiful with a stream running through it.
Majka and Dan arrived later. Majka did ok on the hike. She was slow but didn’t die.
We had beers cooled in the stream and dinner. Then bedtime around 8:30.
There was a very loud frog right by my tent 🐸.

It was a good day minus Majka’s heat exhaustion. The coffee, tortoise, rocks and canyon campsite were great.
⛺How Was My Gear?
My mattress seems to be losing air. Noooooooooo.
💪How did my Body Feel?
Pretty good body day. My feet felt ok with the new insoles.
🍴How was my food situation?
Fully resupplied so I’m currently food rich. And my bag weighs a ton.
🤔What did I learn and how will I action it?
Heat exhaustion sucks. We shouldn’t hike in the heat of the day.
