PCT Trail Journal: Day 29 Hikertown to Bear Camp
On day 29 of the PCT, I slept until about 7 in my real bed at Hikertown.
Majka and Dan had to evacuate their tent because of the wind and sand, so I was pretty smug about being in a wind protected cabin 🤣. We all packed up and I wrote in my journal.
Some other hikers called the Neenach shuttle and we went with them. It took a while but we made it. Unfortunately, they didn’t have pancakes 😢. The breakfast burrito was pretty good though! They have a pretty ok resupply but no prices on anything. Which means it is crazy expensive.
We hung out for a while and then got a ride back to Hikertown. Then we hit the trail!
Going up a huge nasty hill
The first 6 miles were ok with small ups and downs. There were new plants/flowers we hadn’t seen before. We stopped at a lovely stream to take a break and get water. It was getting hot and we had a huge climb.
The 2000-foot climb totally sucked. It was fine at first with gradual switchbacks. Then it just started to go straight up. I had to stop 3 times to catch my breath. It was nice to listen to my book but it felt never-ending. When I got to the top I was super sweaty and the sun went away. So then I was freezing.
This part of the trail was really lush. There were lots of green plants and they were really dense. At the top, it was a green meadow in a live oak forest. Some of the oaks were huge.
We walked 2 more miles to Bear Camp but stopped at the cistern first to get water. Then walked down to the camp. There was no way we were going to walk back up to the water.
I quickly set up camp and started cooking. It was great to have my trail beer. It was delicious. Even warm!
Other thru-hikers joined us at our picnic table and we had dinner together. It was fun. We told them about Hikertown and they told us about the great town food in our future.
It got dark and cold. I crawled into my tent to warm up. It was a good day. Except that big climb. That was type 2 fun.
